Baye & Asa: HotHouse
March 14 - March 16, 2025
West Coast Premiere
ODC Theater
HotHouse is a commentary on confinement and an exploration of how the COVID-19 pandemic unmasked the greater systemic failures of America. In this evening-length duet, props and clothing are suspended inside of a plastic arena. The enclosed environment serves as an adaptable canvas, transforming into a medical isolation unit, a slaughterhouse, a prison cell, a church. As the narrative unfolds, audiences are witness to the trauma of isolation and the myth of White Jesus.
Baye & Asa is a company creating movement art projects directed & choreographed by Amadi ‘Baye’ Washington & Sam ‘Asa’ Pratt. Hip Hop & African dance languages are the foundation of their technique. The rhythms of these techniques inform the way the duo energetically confronts contemporary dance, theater, and film. Baye & Asa has been presented internationally at venues including The Joyce Theater, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, b12 festival, and the Florence Dance Festival.
